ROCHESTER INTERNATIONAL YOUTH ORGANIZATION (RIYO)

Since 2013, I have been working with this non-profit youth organization in Rochester, MN to empower young Somali youth to work hard and dream big. During my capstone year, I became the program coordinator for the NW site of this organization. I was responsible for recruiting new volunteers, facilitating bi-weekly sessions, helping students complete their homework, mentoring high school students as a group and one to one, and conducting discussion sessions regarding career options and barriers to academic excellence.

One of the most exciting projects that I led with these students was a collaboration with Dr. Martha Bigelow at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities titled Understanding African Global Migration through a Historical Lens. This pilot program paired one history teacher, one youth worker and a few East African high schoolers to work together to better understand their countries' history and the impact migration had on their lives.
